VW has just launched the seventh generation Golf.
Amazing really. Not only does it make me feel very old, it also makes me wonder why they bother entirely redesigning the thing every couple of years.
It’s not as if the current car can really be easily separated from the one before, nor that one from its direct ancestor.
Truth be told, they all look the same. They all drive with the same slightly smug confidence. All are smart, user friendly, ride and handle well and generally won’t scare the horses.
Which begs the question, why spend the thick end of £25,000 on a 1.4 turbo petrol version of the new car (you read that right by the way – £25,000 for a 1.4 Golf), when, for a huge amount less, you could have a car that is pretty much indistinguishable.
Well, the answer is pretty clear so here from the UsedCarExpert team are our three best choices of Golf.
MK5 Golf 1.6 petrol
The Mk5 was a brilliant car when launched and is still very competitive, the 1.6 petrol is the engine of choice is a it likely to be the most reliable. It’s relatively smooth and cars with this engine often have low miles as they are usually private, rather than fleet, purchases.
UsedCarExpert.co.uk Cars for sale: A four year old car with one owner, a full service history and only 35,000 miles on the clock can be had for £7,999.
MK 6 Golf Plus
The Golf plus is essentially a kind of MPV Golf – a bit taller and a bit more practical but slightly less chic. Although it’s a strong seller in Europe, image obsessed Brits have never really taken it to heart. This makes it cheaper than a normal Golf and a wise used choice.
UsedCarExpert.co.uk Cars for sale: A very smart three year old car with only 32,000 miles on the clock is for sale at £9,995. This car has the desirable 2.0 diesel engine
MK6 Golf 1.4 TSi
This car has exactly the same cutting edge drivetrain as the just launched model, and all but the most committed VW anorak will be able to tell them apart.
UsedCarExpert.co.uk Cars for sale: A two year old car, with the 1.4 turbo petrol and DSG automatic gearbox can be had for £10,995. This car only has 21,000 miles on the clock and still has a years warranty.
